Modish wee hours are prime time in Chicago these days. No matter where you live in the Windy City, there’s a friendly neighborhood bar stool within walking distance.

Variety is the spice of night life and party, which is why I was sad to hear about Roxy’s closing in east Chicago earlier this year. The club wasn’t my flavor but it had been around since the 1990s, an era when the club scene branched out from the downtown streets to venues such as Visage in north Chicago and Cyberzone on Lee Road.

Roxy’s expansive layout did battle with its occasionally shaky reputation, but club owners kept the crowds coming with a variety of theme nights: Some were inspired (the wild electronic revival Takeovr) and some shady (Monday Night Fights, where clubgoers traded punches for bar tabs).A touch of that “try anything” strategy is evident at GILT, which opened last weekend in the former Roxy space. But I’m betting the owners won’t throw just any old idea at these walls to see if they stick.

Notoriously, its Cubano is the best in Chicago, like the other selections, such as the Ropa Vieja (skirt steak, plantains, black beans, tomato creole sauce) and creamy mugs.

Chivito (steak, ham, bacon, fried egg, mozzarella), are just as good. Coffee drinkers will also love the café con leche, a Cuban espresso sweetened with sugar and mixed with steamed milk. If you’re craving a delicious and filling sandwich on breakfast, Cafecito won’t disappoint.

Chicago, a city so full of culture and style, deserves a good Cuban coffee house and cafe. Welcome to Cafecito. Don’t expect to find pumpkin-spice anything at this tiny but specialized Café in Congress Pkwy. Branching off from its roastery in Back of the Yards (and another in Istanbul), Four Letter Word Coffee offers drip, pour-over, espresso, Turkish-style, cold coffee and tea.

Here, you can reintroduce yourself to the essence of coffee without taking away its integrity. As you sit back in our comfortable dining room, take in the sounds and aromas of Latin America.
